What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is an altered state of awareness, perception, or consciousness that is used by certified Hypnotists to make progress upon a presenting issue. It can be highly relaxed state for many clients. Hypnosis is “a state that resembles sleep but in which you can hear and respond to questions or suggestions” (Merriam-Webster online dictionary).
Hypnosis is a state of inner absorption, concentration, and focused attention. When our minds are concentrated and focused, we are able to use our minds more powerfully. Hypnosis allows people to make progress, grow, and/or use more of their potential.
Some research supports the view that hypnotic communication and suggestions effectively changes aspects of the person’s physiological and neurological functions.
What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to achieve progress on the presented issue. Said another way, Hypnotherapy is “the use of hypnosis to help people with emotional and psychological problems” and the first known use of Hypnotherapy was in 1897 (source: the Merriam-Webster online dictionary).
The difference is in the level of training of the individual practicing it. Hypnosis may be performed by Certified Hypnotists, while Hypnotherapy may only be performed by those who have gone on for more extensive training and have reached the Certified Hypnotherapist (CHT) designation. So, seeing a Certified Hypnotherapist is seeing a qualified professional who has more extensive training than a Hypnotist. Hypnotists are not qualified to do Hypnotherapy.
